Judges’ comments

This is a very good site, with a clever design that lets your customers get right to work.

The site is structured logically. It shows good understanding of the audience wants and needs.

Good use of white space, colour, graphic devices to help the reader. We really like the fact that the customer can get right to what they want on the home page.

Media statement

The Intellectual Property Office of New Zealand (IPONZ) is delighted to be a finalist for the Best Plain English Website in the 2017 Plain English Awards. IPONZ helps New Zealand and international businesses protect their intellectual property rights.

As the first intellectual property (IP) office in the world to operate a 100 percent online model, IPONZ is committed to providing a simple, clear, and user-friendly website. The IPONZ website is designed to link seamlessly with our transactional services, as well as providing rich information for those embarking on their IP journey.

‘Our customers have differing levels of IP knowledge, so it is important that our website and the language used throughout are easily understood by all. Our services encompass several types of IP including trademarks, patents, designs, plant variety rights, and geographical indications. These types of IP have the potential to be complex, so we’re proud to have been able to showcase IP in an effective way using plain English.

‘I’d like to thank Write Limited and the sponsors for recognising us in this category,’ says IPONZ national manager Ingrid Bayliss.
