Ian McDougall'Get smart. Be simple'

A survivor of the sixties, Ian McDougall has learnt the need for plain English the hard way as a brand and communications strategist with some of the world's largest advertising agencies.

Ian has worked with BBDO, Colenso, Y&R, and Saatchi & Saatchi in New Zealand, New York, London, Asia, and Australia. His strategic work has helped two agencies win Agency of the Year. He has managed dominant brands as diverse as Lotto, Bank of New Zealand, Telecom, British Airways, Toyota, Campbell's Soups, Lloyd's Bank of London, and Procter & Gamble.

Ian says the core lesson he's learnt is that 'clients and consumers are unforgiving if you're complex or unclear. Clarity gets you admired; confusion gets you fired. Get smart. Be simple.'

A devoted Wellingtonian, Ian has returned to the Capital to join leading brand-building specialist, BrandNew, as a brand strategist. When not branding people or companies, Ian works on his novel, set in Petone, with no word longer than 10 characters.
